Welcome to Ophthalmology: A Global Multimedia Guide.

The aim of this project is to  bring ophthalmology to life with a series of engaging, high-quality multimedia tutorials, aimed particularly at health workers in resource-poor countries.

The tutorials include:-

  • Carefully defined learning objectives
  • High quality clinical videos collected in Africa
  • Professional animations and illustrations
  • Subtitles and summary boxes to emphasise key points
  • Red and yellow cards pointing out common mistakes

The resource has been developed by a dedicated team of editors and contributors, including ophthalmologists and ophthalmic nurses with years of clinical and teaching experience in developing countries.

The resource is designed to support the Vision 2020 initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness worldwide by 2020.  One of the key requirements is a well trained and supported eye care workforce.

In previous years, health workers in developing countries had major problems obtaining training materials.  The worldwide growth of computers and the internet is a great opportunity to provide health workers with up to date learning materials, even in remote locations.  These materials can be accessed from the internet or provided on CD-ROM or DVD disk according to local needs.

We thank all the patients and eye workers who helped to develop this resource.  We hope you enjoy using it and would be delighted to hear your comments and suggestions.  More tutorials are currently being developed and will be added to this site.  Please come back regularly to keep up with new modules!
